Is apple care worth it?

Im planning to buy an imac and a lot of people have been saying to buy apple care but its pricy. My question is that like if you didnt do anything to your imac and the software just goes down, can u just call them or chat with them on the apple site without the apple care? Or does do u HAVE to have apple care to talkto someone? Im getting he desktop one so im bot moving it around
